Loofah Sponge

Loofa gourds are technically a member of the cucumber family. This versatile vining vegetable dries to form a scrubbing sponge that has been used for hundreds of years. In its young stages it is similar to summer squash and can be eaten as a vegetable. When fully ripe it is very fibrous and can be processed to be used as a bath or kitchen sponge. By late summer loofas are at maturity and start to dry. The easiest way to harvest is to let it dry on the vine for a few months and the flesh will disappear and leave behind the fibrous skeleton and seeds. If your loofa is hit by frost, pick and peel the outer skin and hang it to dry some more. Once dry the seeds will easily shake out and your loofah will be ready for use.
