Sometimes referred to as “The Mother of All Peppers” Chiltepin is the only wild native chili pepper in the United States. Texas named it the state’s “official native pepper” in 1997. For generations it has grown wild the US/Mexico Borderland areas. The peppers are tiny, round or oval shaped and quite hot, the heat is intense at first but dissipates quickly. This bold pepper has a distinctive sharp flavor with hits of earthiness and smokiness. The word “chiltepin” came from the language of the Aztecs. This historic Heirloom pepper plays a role in food and culture and is highly revered among the Native American tribes of the Southwest.
This rare chili still grows wild and is protected in three National Parks.
